Dr. Beverley Allan
Conservationist feminist and humanitarian Beverley Allan was born in Wynnum Queensland Australia on March 27, 1931. Beverley challenged tradition by completing studies in Australia England and the United States to become a physician. She lived in the San Francisco Bay area for many years in practice at the Kaiser-Permanente Hospital in Richmond California giving generously of her time to patients many of whom struggled to secure basic health care. After retirement Bev discovered the lovely oak woodlands of Lyle Canyon near Elgin Arizona where she purchased a unique one-of-a-kind property known as Sunken Rock Ranch. Bev cleaned up the property making it once again hospitable for the many birds, deer, and javelinas native to the canyon. Family and friends frequently shared her home and feline companions and her enthusiasm for the many birds and animals drawn to her property. Bev loved good conversations about the social and political issues of the day and became a naturalized US citizen in 1997. She traveled frequently enjoying many birding expeditions in other countries. Bev always made new friends in her travels sharing her natural curiosity and delight in the natural world. Bev was a supporter and contributor to many conservation groups and organizations representing the disenfranchised. The University of Arizona women's basketball games were also a great passion for Bev who faithfully cheered for the team win or lose. On February 29, 2004, Bev departed suddenly and peacefully. She has left behind a legacy for family and friends who are often reminded of her wit engaging personality and unfailing generosity.
