Donna L. Jurich, Director of Elementary Education (2008 – 2024) and Early Childhood Education (2008 – 2020) for the University of Arizona College of Education, built a legacy of noteworthy accomplishment and invaluable contributions to elementary and early childhood teacher preparation for the state of Arizona. Over her tenure as director, Donna stewarded a complex undergraduate education program that produced over 450 beginning early childhood and elementary teachers each year. Her close attention to curriculum development and implementation led to modifications of two major programs, resulting in enhanced learning opportunities for students that ultimately prepared them to be knowledgeable, skilled, and equitable teachers for the children of Arizona and states beyond. While establishing high professional expectations for students during their coursework and field placements, Donna also provided the personal guidance and mentorship that students needed to thrive and grow as future teachers. Moreover, Donna’s leadership to establish due process protocols for students as well as her guidance during and following the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated a steadfast commitment to academic integrity and student welfare. Donna was committed to equity and social justice, supporting bilingual, rural, and Indigenous students to become teachers for their own communities, increasing the number and enhancing the quality of teachers across all of Arizona. Donna's dedication extended beyond administrative duties as she actively engaged in teaching courses on social justice foundations and classroom management, embodying her commitment to pedagogical excellence. Donna's impact reverberated through her tireless efforts in maintaining program accreditation, engaging in recruitment initiatives, and fostering meaningful community partnerships, leaving an indelible mark on the College, the University, and the teaching profession. Donna’s influence and legacy will continue to inspire generations of educators to come.
