Lynne A. Oland

Lynne A. Oland is a devoted mother and grandmother a superb scientist an enthusiastic mentor a tireless volunteer and a valued and beloved colleague. Lynn received a BSN from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, an MSN in nursing from the Catholic University of America in Washington DC, and a PhD in physiology from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. She did postdoctoral work in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at Georgetown University and in 1987 she moved to Tucson, Arizona to continue her work on neuron-glian cell interactions mediating olfactory receptor axon guidance and the formation of functional subcompartments in the olfactory portion of the brain. Her work is funded by the National Institutes of health. Her professional service extensive and includes serving as President of the Tucson Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience Secretary of the Imaging and Microanalysis Society and Chairperson of the organizing committee for the 2003 International Conference on Olfactory Development. She has been involved in organizing the annual Brain Awareness Week activities for many years and engages in community outreach about the brain. She has mentored numerous undergraduate students and took the lead in developing the undergraduate major in neuroscience and cognitive science at the University of Arizona. She also has been very active in supporting a high quality of life for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities most notably serving from 2003 to 2006 as the President of The Arc in Tucson. She is passionate about society's responsibility to support and encourage the less abled to reach their full potential. Lynne gives generously and enthusiastically of her time and expertise. She is an excellent role model for aspiring scientists and an inspiration to us all!
