Carolyn L. Murdaugh
Carolyn L. Murdaugh Professor College of Nursing University of Arizona has served as Associate Dean for Research and Interim Dean. Prior to these appointments she was Associate Dean for Research College of Nursing University of South Carolina 1996 to 2004. Dr. Murdaugh also served as Director of the NIH funded P30 Core Research Center for Health Promotion and Risk Reduction in Special Populations in the College of Nursing University of South Carolina from 1991-2004. From 1995-1996 and 1988-1992 she was Director of Research in the College of Nursing University of Arizona and Director of Clinical Research University Medical Center Tucson Arizona. She has also held research and administrative positions at the National Institute of Nursing Research National Institutes of Health as Senior Scientist and Chief of the Laboratory for the Study of Human Responses to Health and Illness. She was the first intramural scientist in the National Institute of Nursing Research to receive tenure at the National Institutes of Health. She has also held adjunct professorships at the University of Hawaii and Johns Hopkins University. In all of these positions she has mentored faculty and students as well as conducted a program of clinical research. Dr. Murdaugh received a diploma in nursing from the Medical College of South Carolina a BS and MS from the University of California San Francisco and a PhD from the University of Arizona. Dr. Murdaugh is a nationally known nurse scholar in research and education. Her program of research which focuses on interventions to promote health and quality of life in chronic illness was consistently funded for twenty five years. She has been recognized for promoting the highest standards of teaching scholarship and clinical practice through awards from the American Heart Association American Association of Critical Care Nurses Sigma Theta Tau The Arizona Hospital Association Arizona Nurses Association and South Carolina League for Nursing. She received distinguished alumni awards from the Medical University of South Carolina and the University of California San Francisco. She was elected a distinguished practitioner National Academy of Practice in Nursing a fellow in the Council of Cardiovascular Nursing a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and honored as one of seven national leaders who transformed cardiovascular nursing and one of 100 distinguished graduates of the University of California San Francisco School of Nursing during their Centennial celebration. Dr. Murdaugh has authored or co-authored over 100 publications and six books. She has been active in many professional associations and has served on national task forces and committees and journal editorial review boards. She has also served as a grant peer reviewer for the National Institutes of Health the American Heart Association the TriService Nursing Research Program and numerous specialty groups.
