Barbara Ballard Schofield

Barbara Ballard Schofield was born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania on January 9, 1930, the daughter of Dr. Sidney Ballard and Isabelle Burnham Ballard. She was raised in Nashville Tennessee and graduated from Ward Belmont Girls School. She attended the University of Texas at Austin, Texas and was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority there. She graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in Elementary Education in 1950. She married Robert John Schofield on June 16, 1950, and has three children: Laura Schofield, Bailey Robert, John Schofield Jr. (deceased), and Carole Schofield Bailey. She taught 4th grade in a demonstration school in Milwaukee for three years while her husband was attending Marquette Dental School. After returning to Tucson, she was active in Catalina Junior Women's Club, Junior League of Tucson, Tucson Medical Center, Auxiliary St. Luke's Board of Visitors PEO Chapter B Palos Verdes Garden Club and Patio Garden Club. She attended the University of Arizona Graduate Program and earned master's degrees in reading special education and educational psychology. She subsequently became a Reading Specialist for Mission Manor School of Sunnyside District. After four years she joined the Catalina Foothills School District 16 as a special education teacher and later Director of Special Education. A few years later she became Director of Psychology for the Catalina Foothills School District. She retired from CFSD in 1989 when she purchased and began restoration on a ruin in Alamos Sonora Mexico. During that time she became active in the Alamos Scholarship Committee for underprivileged preparatory students and Alamos Home Tours and she also founded the Garden Club and the Spanish Club. In 2000 she had constructed a beach house in San Carlos Sonora Mexico and became co-chair of Rescate Services Telephone Directory of San Carlos Sonora in 2001. In addition she founded the Performing Arts Council of San Carlos (PAC) for which she served as Program Director for 6 year and she also became a member of the Arizona-Sonora Commission.
