Jean Hoffman
Jean Lazarus Hoffman was born on May 1,1925 and grew up in Columbus Ohio. She went on to college at Wellesley in Massachusetts and majored in Modern History. Wellesley a college for women was also a school that promoted the motto of "Non Ministrari sed Ministrare" which means not to be ministered unto but to minister. This could also be a fair motto and statement of the life that Jean Hoffman led. After college she married Junius Hoffman in 1946. In 1954 they and their three children moved to Cleveland where her husband practiced law for 13 years. While living there Hoffman became involved in the organization Maternal Health which would later become known as Planned Parenthood. Hoffman served on Maternal Health's board for several years before moving to Tucson where her husband became a law professor at the University of Arizona. While in Tucson Hoffman worked for Planned Parenthood and later became the president of it. She served on the board from 1969 to 1972 became the chair in 1973 and served again as the chair from 1975 to 1978. Prudence Hoffman commented on her mother's involvement with Planned Parenthood "She was very proud and had a passion for it. While on the board Jean was a tireless and effective fundraiser". Hoffman's involvement in Planned Parenthood had an impact on two of her children as well. They both volunteered for Planned Parenthood of Tucson. Hoffman died in 1980 but one of the three Planned Parenthood centers in Tucson is named in her honor.
