Sally J. Stevens

Sally J. Stevens was born in Grand Rapids Michigan in 1955 the daughter of Henry and Evelyn Stevens and sister of Jane Stevens Turcotte. She and her husband John Bogart have three sons Alexander Thomas and Henry Delmont. Sally received her BA from Evergreen State College in Olympia Washington in 1978 and her Ph.D. from the University of Arizona in 1987. Interested in promoting the health and wellbeing of women and girls Sally worked in the private sector as a clinician and later a researcher to advance women's health. In 1995 Sally returned to the University of Arizona as an Associate Research Professor with the Southwest Institute for Research on Women (SIROW). At SIROW Sally continued to examine issues of women's substance abuse mental health and health-related disparities including HIV. She conducted studies on gender differences in the clinical profiles of men and women entering treatment; researched the co-occurrence of trauma violence substance use and HIV; developed women-centered interventions; and promoted the advancement of women and girls through the dissemination of her research finding. Over the past 20 years Sally has been awarded well over 50 million dollars in grants and contracts which have provided valuable services for women and girls while illuminating how such services can enhance and improve their lives. Currently Sally serves as the Executive Director of SIROW an appointment she accepted in 2004.
