Joyce Grove Keshner
Joyce Keshner?s students delight in knowing that their coach and mentor will be publicly honored while privately cherished. She won acclaim for her work as a woman in conducting in a field largely closed to women at that time and even somewhat to this day. Joyce Keshner is a concert pianist vocal coach and conductor. She was the founder and conductor of the Ars Musica Chorale and Orchestra the Jubal Consort and the Camerata Singers. She has performed extensively in North America and Europe. She was at the forefront of the early music revival. As a researcher and specialist in early music she was active in performing Baroque music during the revival of the new old sound with accompaniment of authentically reproduced early instruments sung and played in interpretations stripped of the Romantic style of the then current practice. She founded an annual Bach Festival in New Jersey and New York with the 12-voice Camerata Singers performing rarely sung Baroque works. Her well-known soloists included Samuel Ramey Julianne Baird Douglas Perry Howard Crook and Grayson Hirst among others. Reviewers praised her dynamic interpretations and musicianship. Ms. Keshner holds a master?s degree in music from the University of the City of New York. She attended the Juilliard School of Music Columbia University Westminster Choir College and Mannes College of Music majoring in conducting theory composition and piano. She holds a bachelor?s degree in education from Southern Connecticut State University. She studied conducting with Abraham Kaplan Harold Aks Rudolph Thomas Edward Murray and Carl Bamberger. Her composition mentors were Frederic Werle Vittorio Giannini and Mario Davidovsky. Among her piano teachers were Josef Raieff John Goldmark Martin Canin Frances Dillon and Freda Rosenblatt. As well as teaching voice in her studio in New York City she was a fellow at the prestigious Aston Magna Academy of Early Music. Ms. Keshner was also affiliated with the Department of Speech Pathology at Saint Luke?s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. Her work in vocal rehabilitation was and has been based upon the implementation of bel canto vocal techniques the early Italian method of voice building. Currently she holds master classes in vocal technique and performance through Pima College in Tucson Arizona and continues to teach voice privately. Her work involves coaching singers for academic and professional careers therapeutic vocal retraining as well as performing as a piano recitalist and accompanist. She is a member of NATS the National Association of Teachers of Singing as well as being an adjudicator. Joyce Keshner brings the totality of her being to every teaching moment wrapping each student in her depth of knowledge her caring and her extraordinary musical talent. She introduces each to the eternal possibilities that exist.
