An only child, Joan was a horsewoman from her early childhood. Independent and outgoing even in her youth, she was the first woman to take her driver license test in a Willy's jeep in Illinois. Joan received her degree in bacteriology from the University of Illinois and gave up her graduate fellowship in bacteriology to marry and raise a family. She instilled in her three daughters, the values of strength, independence and higher education. She moved to Tucson in 1979, newly divorced and with horses in tow. Here she made many new friends, survived breast cancer in 1983, witnessed all her daughters graduate from the University of Arizona as well as the birth, growth and college graduation of her only grandchildren, Cameron and Colin. Joan volunteered with Therapeutic Riding of Tucson (TROT), Handi-dogs, Top Dog and supported animal related organizations. She loved riding horses in Saguaro National Park and spending time with her many rescued dogs.
